Press releases menu

Acting on behalf of Mercy Union Generalate, J&E Shepherd Chartered Surveyors is offering for sale a convent based in Glasgow city centre, suitable for a variety of alternative uses, subject to planning.

Located at 62 Hill Street, within Garnethill on the northern side of the city centre, the building represents a unique development opportunity.

Currently used as a convent, the property comprises an original chapel dating back to 1876 together with a modern residential block built around 1977. Planned over ground and first floors, the chapel is constructed of solid blonde sandstone walls incorporating a bell tower of similar construction. Many original features have been maintained. The residential block, meanwhile, is formed over basement, ground, first and second floor levels.

Situated on the north side of Hill Street between its junction with Scott Street and Dalhousie Street, the property forms part of a mixed use area comprising residential and educational, religious buildings with neighbouring commercial occupiers to include Garnetbank Primary School, Glasgow Dental Hospital, Glasgow School of Art and St. Aloysius College amongst others.

Steve Barnett, commercial partner at J&E Shepherd, said, “This property represents a unique opportunity for an occupier or developer to secure a very attractive building offering a wide variety of alternative uses.

“Given its strategic location, just a two minute walk from the bustling city centre, the convent could easily be converted into a boutique hotel, a nursery, offices or a suite of residential flats.”

With a total gross internal floor area of over 11,350 sq ft, offers in excess of £1 million are invited.
