Buying in Gorebridge

Gorebridge is a small but growing town of roughly 8,100 residents located in Midlothian. Gorebridge is located approximately 12 miles south of Edinburgh, about 6 miles from Dalkeith, 5 miles from Bonnyrigg and 10 miles from Penicuik. The town is also close to the Borders, with Galashiels (26 miles away) being relatively accessible via road and rail.

Originally a small village, Gorebridge grew significantly during the 19th and early 20th centuries due to its coal mining and gunpowder production industries. It was an important hub for Midlothian’s industrial sector, with mines operating in the surrounding areas and the Stobs Mill Gunpowder Works playing a critical role in supplying explosives for mining and construction. With the decline of heavy industry in the latter half of the 20th century, Gorebridge experienced economic downturns. However, the town has seen a revival in recent years, particularly with the reopening of the Borders Railway in 2015, which re-established a direct train link to Edinburgh.

Today, Gorebridge is a predominantly residential town, with new housing developments attracting families and professionals seeking affordable housing within commuting distance of Edinburgh which is just 12 miles away. The town retains a mix of traditional stone-built homes and modern housing estates.
Transport connectivity is very good for residents and commuters. Gorebridge Railway Station provides direct services to Edinburgh Waverley in around 25 minutes, making it ideal fast travel to the city centre. By road, the A7 runs through Gorebridge, providing a direct route to Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders. The Edinburgh City Bypass (A720) is easily accessible within a short drive, linking to major motorways including the M8 and M9. Regular bus services connect Gorebridge with Edinburgh and other Midlothian towns.

In terms of amenities and things to do, the town has a growing selection of local shops, supermarkets, and services, while nearby Dalkeith and Bonnyrigg offer more extensive retail and leisure facilities. Active people and outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy in and around Gorebridge. The surrounding countryside offers excellent opportunities for hillwalking, cycling, and wildlife watching. The Pentland Hills Regional Park is just a short drive away, offering more adventurous hiking and outdoor activities. Then there’s the Midlothian Snowsports Centre at Hillend which provides skiing and snowboarding facilities year-round. Gore Glen Woodland Park and Vogrie Country Parks are close by and are excellent for walking, cycling, and wildlife spotting.

As for local education in the town, Gorebridge, Gore Glen, Stobhill and St. Andrews RC Primary Schools serve younger students. For secondary education, students typically attend Newbattle High School or St. David’s RC High School in nearby Dalkeith.

Detached properties for instance sold for £326,284, semi-detached for £216,614, terraced for £187,822, and flats for £159,324.
