Originally a small village, Gorebridge grew significantly during the 19th and early 20th centuries due to its coal mining and gunpowder production industries. It was an important hub for Midlothian’s industrial sector, with mines operating in the surrounding areas and the Stobs Mill Gunpowder Works playing a critical role in supplying explosives for mining and construction. With the decline of heavy industry in the latter half of the 20th century, Gorebridge experienced economic downturns. However, the town has seen a revival in recent years, particularly with the reopening of the Borders Railway in 2015, which re-established a direct train link to Edinburgh.
