Buying in Alexandria

Alexandria is in the Vale of Leven in West Dunbartonshire, just 25 miles northwest of Glasgow and is home to roughly 6,000 residents. It sits on the banks of the River Leven and lies only a short distance from the southern tip of Loch Lomond, one of Scotland’s most iconic and scenic areas. The town is part of a wider conurbation that includes Balloch to the north, Bonhill and Renton to the south, and Jamestown in between. Dumbarton is just a 10-minute drive away, and Glasgow is around 40 minutes by car or train, making Alexandria a realistic base for those working in the city but seeking a quieter lifestyle.

Historically, Alexandria grew during the 18th and 19th centuries as a centre of textile production and bleaching works thanks to its river access and proximity to raw materials. The industrial era saw the rise of mills, print works, and later, the motor industry, most notably the Argyll Motor Works built in the early 1900s. In its heyday, Alexandria was a prosperous and busy town with strong links to Scotland’s manufacturing backbone. As with many such towns, the decline of industry in the late 20th century led to a period of transition. Since then, Alexandria has gradually evolved into a largely residential settlement, with many of its residents now commuting to Glasgow or Dumbarton for employment.

Today, Alexandria is a modestly sized town forming part of a larger Vale of Leven population of over 20,000 people. The local economy still supports a few notable employers, such as the Chivas Brothers bottling plant and nearby distilleries, as well as retail and service sector roles within the town itself. However, with fast and reliable transport links to Glasgow, Alexandria is firmly established as a commuter town.

For commuters, transport links are very good. Alexandria railway station is situated right in the heart of the town and provides regular services to Glasgow Queen Street via the North Clyde Line. Trains run approximately every 30 minutes, and the journey into the city takes around 45 minutes. For drivers, the A82 offers a direct road route to both Glasgow and the Highlands, while local bus services provide additional connectivity to surrounding towns and villages.

When it comes to amenities and things to do, living in Alexandria offers access to some of Scotland’s most admired outdoor locations. Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park begins just to the north of the town, with walking, cycling, boating, and wildlife-watching all within easy reach. Balloch Castle Country Park and the Loch Lomond Shores visitor centre provide leisure, retail, and nature-based activities, all just minutes away. Overtoun Estate and the Kilpatrick Hills offer further options for outdoor pursuits, with quiet woodlands, waterfalls, and hill walks popular among locals.

Alexandria in combination with the wider area has a good range of amenities for residents, including local shops, supermarkets, cafes, and sports facilities. The historic Lomond Galleries housed in the former motor works is a distinctive feature, while nearby Balloch acts as a gateway to Loch Lomond tourist-focused retail and leisure opportunities such as Loch Lomond Shores which combines shopping with attractions such as the Loch Lomond Sea Life Aquarium and the Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre.

When it comes to local education, the town is served by several primary schools, including Christie Park Primary School, Lennox Primary School, which has been consistently rated among the top performing in the area, and St Mary’s RC Primary School. At secondary age, pupils typically attend Vale of Leven Academy, a non-denominational secondary school with a modern campus and a wide curriculum, situated close to the town centre.

In April 2025, property in the Alexandria area was at an average value of £144,292. Over the last 12 months however, different property types have had different average prices. Detached properties for instance sold for £270,706, semi-detached for £184,731, terraced for £112,073, and flats for £87,657.
