Buying in Renton
Situated on the eastern banks of the River Leven between Dumbarton and Alexandria of which it shares a contiguous border, Renton is a small settlement in West Dunbartonshire with a population of around 2,000 to 2,500 residents. Just over 20 miles northwest of Glasgow city centre, the village enjoys a strategic location that makes it well placed for commuters while retaining its own identity shaped by industry, community pride, and historical significance.
Renton takes its name from Cecilia Renton, the wife of the landowner Sir Alexander Tulloch, and was founded in the late 18th century during a period of significant industrial expansion. It grew rapidly around the textile industry, with the Dalquhurn and Cordale print works at its heart. Like many towns in the Vale of Leven, Renton played a role in Scotland’s industrial development, contributing notably to textile printing and dyeing during the 19th century.
Modern-day Renton remains a tight-knit community with a strong local identity. Although smaller than neighbouring Alexandria or Dumbarton, it is well connected and has seen improvement in housing and amenities over the years. Renton today is distinctly residential, with a working-class character rooted in its industrial past. The area continues to undergo modest regeneration, and while it doesn’t have the retail density of nearby towns, it benefits from proximity to key amenities located just minutes away in Dumbarton, Alexandria and Balloch.
While there is no large-scale commercial or retail sector within Renton itself, the Vale of Leven Industrial Estate nearby provides some local employment opportunities and there are many more employment opportunities nearby in Alexandria, Balloch, Dumbarton and Clydebank. Many residents also commute further to Glasgow for work. Good transport links make this relatively simple; Renton railway station sits on the North Clyde Line, providing direct services to Glasgow Queen Street Low Level in under 45 minutes, as well as services to Balloch and further still. By road, the A82 trunk road runs just west of Renton, linking it to Glasgow as well as Loch Lomond and to the Highlands. This route is vital for those driving north or south, offering swift access to Glasgow or deeper into Argyll and Bute. Bus services also connect Renton to surrounding towns and villages, although the frequency is limited.
When it comes to amenities and things to do, Renton itself doesn’t offer an abundance within its borders, but it doesn’t really need to. It benefits greatly from its proximity to Alexandria, Balloch, Dumbarton and Clydebank for amenities and shopping. Outdoor pursuits such as walking, cycling, boating, and hillwalking are easily accessible, particularly with Loch Lomond and the Trossachs just a short journey away.
When it comes to local schooling, primary education is provided by Renton Primary School, located on the western side of the village. The school also integrates an early year’s centre, catering to pre-school children. For secondary education, most pupils attend Vale of Leven Academy in nearby Alexandria. The academy is a comprehensive school with a broad catchment area serving the Vale of Leven communities. Additionally, West College Scotland has a campus in nearby Clydebank for those seeking further education, while Glasgow’s colleges and universities are easily reachable by train for higher education students.
In May 2025, property in the Alexandria area was at an average value of £146,343. Over the last 12 months however, different property types have had different average prices. Detached properties for instance sold for £360,000, semi-detached for £146,000, terraced for £104,428, and flats for £60,200.
