DC Thomson opens up limited workspace at iconic Meadowside HQ

Acting on behalf of DC Thomson, Shepherd Chartered Surveyors has been instructed to market a limited amount of office space within Meadowside, the company’s iconic Dundee headquarters, for lease.

DC Thomson will remain the principal occupier of the landmark building, occupying eight of the building’s 12 floors, with the available accommodation representing a limited portion of the space.

The move follows the company’s significant redevelopment and refurbishment of its iconic headquarters, alongside changes in working patterns, and continues Meadowside’s long-standing role as a home to both DC Thomson and other organisations.

Meadowside has accommodated other organisations over the years, and making selected workspace available continues that established approach while helping bring more people into Dundee city centre.

DC Thomson is a family-owned business headquartered in Dundee with a presence in London and other locations worldwide. Established in 1905, the business is well known and home to some of the UK’s best loved media brands.

The DC Thomson HQ building is a landmark Category ‘B’ Listed property within Dundee’s Central Conservation Area, extending to more than 78,000 sq ft. Dating from 1902, with later additions, it continues to serve as the home of DC Thomson and its portfolio of leading media and technology brands.

Prominently located overlooking Albert Square and The McManus, Meadowside is one of Dundee’s most recognisable commercial buildings and has been synonymous with DC Thomson for more than a century.

Following a substantial refurbishment programme completed in 2017, it combines heritage architecture with modern office facilities and collaborative workspaces. It is fully security controlled with a 24-hour entrance/reception. Meadowside has also accommodated other organisations over the years, with Blackadders law firm moving into the building in 2024.

Gerry McCluskey, partner at Shepherd in Dundee, said: “DC Thomson’s HQ building offers first class office accommodation to prospective tenants, with a substantial second floor suite and two smaller tower floor suites available within this landmark city centre building.

“The building has been comprehensively refurbished to high class standards while retaining period features, offering modern facilities and services throughout.

“This is a rare opportunity for businesses to secure accommodation within one of Dundee’s best-known commercial buildings. We expect interest from organisations looking for a high-quality city centre location alongside a respected and long-established Scottish business.”

Christopher Thomson, Chairman of DC Thomson, said: “Meadowside has been at the heart of DC Thomson for generations and remains our home in Dundee. After completely redeveloping and refurbishing our iconic headquarters, and with more flexible working patterns now part of business life, it is natural that we continue to accommodate other organisations within this fine building, as we have done in the past.

“DC Thomson will continue to occupy the majority of the building, and we are proud to play our part in the city’s ongoing regeneration from our iconic headquarters.”

Dundee is located on the East Coast of Scotland mid-way between Aberdeen to the north and Edinburgh to the south, overlooking the Tay Estuary. It is Scotland’s fourth largest city and is the regional centre for employment, services and retailing within Tayside.

The city has its own airport with daily flights to London and sits on the main East Coast Railway Line which runs services into London.

The local economy is diverse with thriving sectors including life sciences, health care, digital technology and creative industries and boasts two prominent universities: the University of Dundee and Abertay University, both offering a range of programmes and vibrant student life.

Dundee’s ongoing waterfront regeneration and the opening of V&A Dundee have helped reinforce the city’s reputation as a leading centre for culture, innovation and investment.

Albert Square is located in the heart of the city centre in an environmentally attractive setting, and is home to the McManus (Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum).

The main shopping area, including the Overgate Shopping Centre, is a few minutes’ walk away. On street public parking is close to hand and nearby off-street parking includes the recently refurbished Bell Street Hub.

The following rental offers will be considered: second floor £200,000 pa; eighth floor £30,000 pa and ninth floor £30,000 pa. Interested parties should contact the sole letting agent on tel 01382 878055.
