Buying in Aberlady

Aberlady is an affluent, picturesque coastal village of roughly 1,300 residents in East Lothian on the Firth of Forth. It is situated about 3 miles southwest of Gullane, about 8 miles southwest of North Berwick, about 3.5 miles northeast of Longniddry and about 5 miles north of Haddington.

Aberlady once served as the port for Haddington, but today is more of a quiet commuter suburb for residents working in Edinburgh and some larger settlements in East Lothian. Residents must rely on car as the primary method of transport by way of the A198 and A6317 roads that allow for onward connections east, south, and west. The nearest train stations is located in Longniddry and takes about 10 minutes to reach. There are regular local bus services connecting residents to nearby settlements.

Aberfeldy has the usual array of local service and amenities you would expect in a village of this size. Residents would typically travel to Haddington or Musselburgh and surrounding settlements for a wider choice of shops and services.

Aberlady though does boasts the excellent golf courses of Luffness, Kilspindie and Craigielaw which draw many locals and visitors regularly. The shore of Aberlady is also a nationally important refuge for thousands of geese in the autumn. They are an incredible spectacle as they fly in to roost on the mudflats.

Aberlady Bay is an important local nature reserve and was the first in the UK, created back in 1952. The bay, between Aberlady and Gullane, is a site of special scientific interest. Waterston House, overlooking Aberlady Bay, is the headquarters of the Scottish Ornithologists’ Club (SOC). The Waterston House library holds over 3,500 items and is said to be the largest ornithological library in Scotland. Additionally, Aberlady Bay holds the wrecks of eight 19th or early 20th century fishing vessels, which have been designated as maritime scheduled ancient monuments, and two wrecks of XT-craft, training versions of the X-class submarine.

In terms of local schooling, the town is served by a single primary school: Aberlady Primary School. When of secondary age, pupils would attend North Berwick High School.
