Barrhead is a town of roughly 20,000 people in East Renfrewshire. It’s about eight miles away to the south-west of Glasgow City Centre with excellent transport links by road, bus, and railway making it a great commuter town for workers based in the city and nearby Paisley. Specifically, it is served by the M77 motorway, regular bus services running from Barrhead into Glasgow, Paisley, Neilston, and Newton Mearns, and, Barrhead train station runs regular services into Glasgow Central Station as well as to Kilmarnock, Stranraer, and Carlisle.
The name Barrhead comes from the agricultural term ‘Barr’ meaning long ploughed furrows for cultivating crops. Barrhead was formed when a group of small textile-producing villages grew into one other. The town still retains a village feel being located on the edge of the Glennifer Braes and much greenbelt and farmland. While today it is known as a commuter town it was once a major centre for manufacturing before a decline in these industries led to the closure of nearly all this industry.
In terms of amenities, Silverburn shopping centre isn’t far and is one of the largest shopping centres in the UK. The town also has a sports centre offers a range of leisure facilities. As mentioned above, Barrhead sits on the edge of the Gleniffer Braes, a range of hills including a park area. The park provides a variety of enjoyable outdoor activities and sights for all ages including walks, play areas and waterfalls as well as stunning panoramic views from the Clyde Valley to Ben Lomond.
In terms of education, the town has five quality primary schools with one notably seen as ‘the best in Scotland’ in recent years: St. Mark’s. In 2007 the school received an outstanding report from HM Inspectorate of Education with 11 “excellents” – the most ever recorded by HMIE. Indeed, East Renfrewshire generally has a reputation for quality schooling. The town is served by two secondary schools: St. Luke’s High School and Barrhead High, both located in the Auchenback area. St. Luke’s High School was named a School of Ambition by the Scottish Executive.
