Buying in Helensburgh

Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute, is a lovely town of some 13,600 residents about 25 miles northwest of Glasgow, and about 8 miles northwest of Dumbarton. It lies on the north shore of the Firth of Clyde, and was named after the wife of Sir James Colquhoun, the town founder, at the end of the 18th century.

Helensburgh owes much of its growth to its seaside location, indeed once a bustling Victorian holiday resort on the Clyde. Much of this recent history is still evident today in the town’s many handsome Victorian sandstone buildings and residences, wide tree-lined streets, its long promenade and its parks and gardens. Steamer services used to run up and down the Clyde dropping many locals and visitors off at various points, with Helensburgh one of the premier stops. The arrival of the railway in 1858 improved transport links and cemented the town as one of the premier resorts in the West Coast.

Today, Helensburgh is mainly a commuter town for residents working in the city of Glasgow, as well as other nearby towns and villages some of the notable ones being Garelochhead, Dumbarton, Alexandria and Cardross.

As such, transport links to the town are well developed. The town has three railway stations. The main station is Helensburgh Central, the terminus of the North Clyde Line and Craigendoran at the east end of the town is on the same line. Helensburgh Upper is on the West Highland Line; trains from here go north to Fort William, Mallaig and Oban while, in the opposite direction, the Caledonian Sleeper provides a direct train service to London.

There is also a bus service to Glasgow, as well as local bus services to and from other nearby settlements. For road users, the A814 and A818 offer connections to the A82 and M8 which in turn opens routes further to the north, east and south of Scotland. Glasgow is just about 40 to 45 minutes away by car.

Even though the heyday of Helensburgh as a Victorian resort has long passed, there’s still a plethora of interesting and fun things to do. The town’s high street has many unique and interesting independent shops as well as your typical chains. There are plenty of nearby pubs, restaurants, cafes, and takeaways too. Helensburgh though is a great place from which to explore and do many outdoor activities. Some nearby include the Argyll Kayak Trail, as well as walking trails like the John Muir Way and Three Lochs Way which takes you on to Loch Lomond, Gareloch, and Loch Long. In upper Helensburgh – developed by wealthy Victorian Glasgow merchants – is Hill House, one of Charles and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh’s most famous works, probably second only to the now destroyed Glasgow School of Art. This fantastic building is complete with original furnishings and is renowned as the finest residential property of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The town is home to a number of annual events, with annual fireworks displays on Guy Fawkes Night and a Real Ale Festival. The Helensburgh & Lomond Highland Games takes place annually around the start of June.

As for local schooling, the local primary schools are Colgrain, John Logie Baird, and Hermitage Primary. For most children in the town, their secondary education takes place at Hermitage Academy, which is also fed by pupils from nearby smaller towns and villages. Parklands School is a purpose-built school for pupils with complex special educational needs. Lomond School is the town’s only private school, providing both day and boarding options for pupils from ages 3 to 18.
