Larkhall, South Lanarkshire is a town home to some 14,900 residents roughly 3 miles to the south-east of Hamilton and 14 miles to the south-east of Glasgow. Larkhall sits on the edge of the scenic Clyde valley, on high ground between the River Clyde to the East and the Avon Water to the West. Larkhall is a typical former industrial town. The industries were mining, weaving and textile area, but most of Larkhall’s traditional industries have now closed, including the Lanarkshire iron and steelworks.

Today, Larkhall is primarily a commuter town for Greater Glasgow. As such, transport links are well developed with the M74 passing nearby enabling travel to Glasgow within 20 minutes or further connections to Edinburgh within 50 minutes. Transport links were boosted still with the opening of a new dedicated train station in 2005, which is on the Argyle line allowing for travel to Glasgow Central Station. Merryton railway station serves the northern end of town and is also on the Argyle Line. Larkhall also has regular bus services to Hamilton, Lanark, Motherwell, Stonehouse, Strathaven and Wishaw and Glasgow.

In terms of amenities, the town has a typical selection of high street and local independent shops and services. There are also a nice few restaurants, cafes and pubs to choose from. Also to be found in the town is the Larkhall Circuit, an outdoor karting facility. Larkhall benefits from its position in the Clyde Valley by having numerous woodlands, river walking and wildlife opportunities practically on its doorstep like in the wooded gorge of Morgan Glen. The Clyde Valley Tourist Route isn’t far and offers plenty to do and see along the way from garden centres, tea rooms, country walks, parks and pony trekking. One of the town’s most notable landmarks is the Morgan Glen viaduct which rises over the Avon Water. At 170 ft is the tallest viaduct in Scotland.

In terms of local schooling, the primary schools in Larkhall are Machanhill Primary School, Dalserf Primary School, Glengowan Primary School, Hareleeshill Primary School, Craigbank Primary School, Netherburn Primary School and Robert Smillie Memorial Primary School. There is also a Catholic primary school, St Mary’s. The town’s sole secondary school is Larkhall Academy.
