It is famous for a historical battle – The Battle of Prestonpans – which took place in 1745 when Jacobite forces defeated a government army. In the past, Prestonpans relied heavily on coal mining.  Other industries were also important in the town including salt works, soap-making, brewing, brickmaking and pottery.

Conveniently, residents can get to central Edinburgh in just 15 minutes. Road links are also good via the A1 and A199 which will get residents to Edinburgh within about half an hour.

As for amenities and things to do, the town has the usual array of independent and chain shops. Prestonpans has the popular and famous Royal Musselburgh Golf Club, the sixth-oldest golf club in the world. The club is still home to The Old Club Cup, the world's oldest golfing trophy still being played for. Prestonpans is also home to some impressive examples of historic architecture. Preston Tower dates from the 15th century and is the former seat of the Hamiltons of Preston. The gardens of the tower are a particular draw. The Mercat Cross is the only one of its kind in Scotland which remains in its original form and location, albeit uniquely surrounded by residential bungalows. Residents in Prestonpans also benefit from the various amenities in Musselburgh, and albeit a little further away, all the attractions and amenities to be found in Leith and Edinburgh.
