Prestonpans is a small former mining town of roughly 10,500 residents in East Lothian. It is about 8 miles east of Edinburgh, and just about 3 miles east from Musselburgh. It is famous for a historical battle – The Battle of Prestonpans – which took place in 1745 when Jacobite forces defeated a government army. In the past, Prestonpans relied heavily on coal mining.  Other industries were also important in the town including salt works, soap-making, brewing, brickmaking and pottery.

Today though, Prestonpans is primarily a commuter town for residents working in Edinburgh, Musselburgh, and other parts of East Lothian. The trainline helps with this. Preston Tower dates from the 15th century and is the former seat of the Hamiltons of Preston. The gardens of the tower are a particular draw.
