An amazing feat of post-war urban planning, the new town of East Kilbride, built in the 1950s to provide spacious and clean living for the residents of the then-overcrowded Glasgow, is still well known for the large open spaces and parkland which have made it a popular Glasgow commuter town. Located just 8 miles from Glasgow, and with excellent train and bus links straight into the city centre, East Kilbride has long been a great place for those working in Glasgow but wishing to live or raise children a little further out. Although the majority of East Kilbride’s housing stock is of the immediate post-war variety, new developments and estates in the town have been almost constantly cropping up, with no shortage of space surrounding the ever-growing town in South Lanarkshire. Although largely modern, East Kilbride does have a small historic area – known affectionately as the East Kilbride “village” – and, on the approach to Glasgow, East Kilbride is close to the historic town of Rutherglen, which is today all but a part of the city. Although primarily a commuter town, East Kilbride has plenty of local amenities and services, including the extensive East Kilbride shopping centre, which attracts shoppers from near and far, the Dollan swimming baths and a popular ice rink.
