Glasgow-born Gavin Russell is an Associate and registered valuer who works in the commercial department within our Dundee and Dunfermline offices.

Having graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University, Gavin began his career with J&E Shepherd in 2005 and aside from a brief relocation to Perth from 2014-2017, has been working in our Dundee office in our Commerical Department. Gavin also completed a secondment to the Tayside local assessor in 2014. In 2020 Gavin took over the running of our Dunfermline Commercial office.

Gavin was promoted to Associate in 2023. He has over 20 years experience in the Tayside, Angus, and Fife commercial property markets, with particular focus and expertise in Commercial Valuation and Agency Sales and Lettings.

Gavin lives just outside Perth with his wife and two children. Gavin has an eclectic mix of sporting interests and regularly zigzags his way round Golf Courses throughout Perthshire (Handicap 12) and is a member of Club300 gym in Perth. Other sporting interests include football and basketball although nowadays he sticks to the armchair.
Gavin’s other interest is on the Theatre stage where he frequently sings and performs in local amateur musicals in front of thousands (or sometimes tens) of people in various principal and supporting roles as a member of Perth Amateur Operatic Society (PAOS), who perform annually at Perth Theatre.

Dundee-born John Paul Bennett is an associate of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and the firm’s finance director based between our Dundee and Edinburgh offices.

After graduating from Glasgow University in 2002, John Paul joined Lloyds TSB’s graduate training program. He spent over five years with LTSB in London in a variety of finance roles before the call of Caledonia brought him back north. He joined the firm upon his return in 2008 and was appointed to managing partner in 2011.

John Paul has overall responsibility for the accounting and finance functions of the firm, which are largely based in our Dundee head office. He is involved with both the daily accounting processes and the internal and external management and financial reporting. In addition, he has responsibility for the firm’s payroll and human resources.

Alan attended George Watson College where he excelled as an office-bearer (Head of House), School Athletics Captain, and was awarded the Stewart MacFarlane Memorial Trophy for Services to Boys Athletics. Following his schooling, Alan undertook a gap year in Canada where he completed a ski instructor’s course. Ruth is responsible for the undertaking, preparation and issuing of residential valuation reports for both private and secured lending purposes. She also prepares Energy Performance Certificates for existing residential properties, which covers the area of West Lothian. This work includes: Mortgage Valuations, Single Surveys and Energy Performance Certificates.

Adam attended Bell Baxter High School where he was captain of the school’s 1XV rugby team before taking a working gap year to Australia. A graduate of Heriot-Watt University with a degree in economics, Adrian completed the College of Estate Management Diploma in Surveying whilst employed by the Valuation Office Agency in Edinburgh. He joined Shepherd in 1997 in our Edinburgh office and, since 1998, has been based in our East Lothian office.

Adrian is responsible for the running of the residential office, which covers East Lothian, parts of the Scottish Borders and North Northumberland. His work includes: residential surveying for Home Reports; mortgage valuations; asset valuations; compulsory purchase and compensation; English right to buy valuations; energy performance certificates and the entire spectrum of private client workloads. Adrian is a Past chair of the Residential Property Professional Group Board of the RICS in Scotland and remains a Board member., is an editorial board member on Scottish Surveyor magazine, was the Ombudsman Property Services Liaison panel member for Scotland and has responsibility for Shepherd’s APC training provision. He is an APC Assessor, Chair and Auditor . Adrian is a judge for the RICS awards.

A resident of Musselburgh, Adrian is a Liverpool and Tranmere Rovers fan, an enthusiastic, if somewhat erratic, golfer and follows the fortunes of the national rugby team with resigned realism. Directly linked to this is an appreciation of malt whisky and real ales.

Born and brought up in Dingwall, David Ross MacDonald (known as Ross) is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and is a Partner in our Inverness and Oban offices.

Ross graduated in 2000 from Napier University in Edinburgh and moved home to work in Dingwall to work as a surveyor for a local firm before joining Shepherd’s Inverness offices in 2006. He was promoted to associate in 2012 and then to Partner in 2022.

David is an Associate Partner heading up the residential valuation department of the St Andrews office. He is a Chartered Surveyor and an RICS Registered Valuer.

David left Waid Academy, Anstruther in 2000 and enrolled onto a Quantity Surveying course at Fife College, Kirkcaldy. After gaining an HND in 2002, David saw the light and decided counting bricks wasn’t for him so enrolled onto an Estate Management course at Herriot Watt University, Edinburgh. During this time, David was working day release within the St Andrews Valuation Department of Hardies LLP to gain on hand experience. After graduating with a BSc in Estate Management in 2004, David began full time employment with Hardies LLP. He passed his APC training in 2006 to become a Chartered Surveyor. In 2015 he was promoted to an Associate Partner and continued this role with the merger with Shepherd Surveyors. David took over the running of the St Andrews office in 2019 after a 2-year secondment to the Kirkcaldy office.
