Buying in Milton of Campsie

Milton of Campsie is a village formerly in the county of Stirlingshire, but now in East Dunbartonshire, at the foot of the Campsie Fells. As the name might suggest, it was once a mill town. It was also well-known for having a printworks as well as a hospital for infectious diseases. Today though it is a popular commuter settlement being just about 10 miles north of Glasgow but with an ‘out of the way’ feeling. It is also roughly just over 2 miles north of Kirkintilloch and just under 2 miles east of Lennoxtown. The popular Glasgow suburb of Bishopbriggs is roughly just 6 miles away.

Most commuters travel to work in Glasgow city centre. Naturally, transport links are important and advantageously for residents these are well developed. The village is where the B757 road meets the A891, with the former being used to reach Kirkintilloch where the A803 then allows for direct travel through Bishopbriggs into central Glasgow. The A891 allows for travel to Lennoxtown and Kilsyth. The M80 motorway also isn’t too far away. In terms of public transport links, the village is served by the half-hourly First Glasgow X85 Service from Glasgow Buchanan Street Bus Station. Unfortunately, there is no active railway line in the village, however, the closest can be found in Lenzie.

In terms of amenities and things to do, Milton of Campsie is somewhat of a sleepy, quiet place, though there is a local café, post office, pharmacy, and some smaller supermarkets. Residents typically travel to Bishopbriggs or Kirkintilloch for more choice of shops and amenities, and Glasgow isn’t too far away either. Instead, the draw of Milton of Campsie is indeed the quiet town feel set amongst a stunning location nestled at the foot of the Campsie Fells. This presents numerous walking opportunities up the fells themselves, as well as walks along the well-maintained Forth and Clyde canal. The Strathkelvin Railway Walk also passes through Milton of Campsie and is a 10km trail following the route of several dismantled railway lines extending from Gartcosh to Strathblane.

As for local schooling then, Craighead Primary School is the only local school. Pupils of secondary age attend either Kirkintilloch High, Kilsyth High or St Ninian’s High Schools. Kirkintilloch High School and St. Ninian’s High School have regularly featured in Scotland’s list of top 50 secondary schools in recent years.

In January 2024, property in Milton of Campsie stood at an average value of £226,345. Over the last 12 months, different property types have had different average prices. Detached properties sold for £308,785, semi-detached for £196,189, terraced for £159,500, and flats for £118,569.
