Turriff or Turra in Scots is a small market town in Aberdeenshire of roughly 5000 residents. The town lies on an elevated position about 166ft above sea level in the heart of Aberdeenshire, approximately 35 miles northwest of Aberdeen City Centre, 29 miles to the west of Peterhead, 23 miles to the southwest of Fraserburgh, 11 miles to the south of Banff and Macduff and 21 miles to the north of Inverurie. It is an historic agricultural town that still serves as an agricultural service centre today. Today’s local industries reflect these links to the agriculture sector and there is also a popular livestock market.

Also tied to the agricultural links of the town is the Turra Show. This is the largest annual event to be held in Aberdeenshire, the Turriff Show promotes Scotland’s agriculture and food industry. Explore the variety of things to see and do including over 250 trade stands, cookery demonstrations and a funfair. Up to 40,000 people typically attend the event. In terms of other local amenities, Turriff has the usual array of chains and independent shops you would expect in a small town.

Many local residents work in the agriculture sector in and around the town, but many also commute to the other Aberdeenshire towns of Banff, Macduff, Inverurie, Dyce, and Aberdeen. Transport links by road are sufficient, the A947 passes through the town and is typically the starting road for most journeys to these other towns. Bus services exist for those residents commuting and travelling onwards to these other towns and Aberdeen City. However, there is no dedicated railway station for the town.

In terms of local schooling then, Turriff Turriff Primary School is the local primary Turriff Academy is the local secondary. People from the surrounding areas, including the villages of Cuminestown, Fyvie and King Edward, attend the secondary school.
