Buying in Twechar

Twechar, East Dunbartonshire, is a village of roughly 1,200 residents. It is located on the Antonine wall, approximately 4 miles east of Kirkintilloch, 5 miles west of Cumbernauld, and about 13 miles from Glasgow city centre. The Forth and Clyde Canal runs close to the village to the north, and closely follows the line of the Antonine Wall. Mining and quarrying led to the development of the village in the latter half of the 19th century which continued for some decades until these industries started to decline. By the 1960s all the mines and quarries had closed. A new enterprise park has been built however, and a small industrial estate has food and engineering businesses providing work to local residents.

While there is some local commerce and light-industry, Twechar is predominantly a commuter settlement for residents working in Glasgow, Bishopbriggs, Kirkintilloch, Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and other nearby settlements. Residentis must rely on car or bus transport for commuting and getting around, as the village has no railway station of its own. The closest station is Croy to the east of the village.

In terms of local amenities and things to do, Twechar has the usual selection of service and businesses you would expect of a settlement of its size. However, there are visible remains of the Antonine wall on Bar Hill and the close by Roman Fort is a local tourist attraction. For a wider choice of amenities and services, residents must travel to Cumbernauld, Kirkintilloch or Kilsyth, but thankfully they are not too far away.

As for local education, the village has one school: Twechar Primary School. Pupils from Twechar Primary now go on to further education at the new state of the art Kirkintilloch High School. The Roman Catholic children are taught in Kirkintilloch for their primary and at the new St Ninian’s High School, Kirkintilloch for their secondary education.

In January 2024, property in Twechar stood at an average value of £191,380.
