Buying in Currie
Currie, is an affluent village of roughly 8,500 residents located on the outskirts of Edinburgh city centre, roughly 7 miles to the southwest. It is right next to the villages of Balerno, and Juniper Green, the later it shares a contiguous border with. It is likely it would have shared a contiguous border with Balerno too by now if not for the confluence of the Water of Leith and Bavelaw Burn surrounding the northern tip of Balerno akin to a moat.
Currie today is a popular commuter village for residents mainly working in Edinburgh city centre. Though the term ‘village’ might lead to think overly rural, small, and quiet. It certainly does have a village feel but being only 7 miles away from Edinburgh city centre, and sandwiched between two other villages makes it a comfortable and quiet place to live with local amenities without actually being too far away from anything of more significance.
Transport links for commuters are plentiful. The A70 Lanark Road cuts through the village and will take road users directly into Edinburgh, or onto the City of Edinburgh Bypass. Bus services are frequent seven days a week, and the village even has a railway station – Curriehill – making it an ideal place to live for commuters. The Water of Leith bike path is another option for commuters that goes to Edinburgh city centre but is mainly used for more leisurely purposes.
As for local amenities, the village has a good range of local shops, pubs, cafes, post office, butcher and more. Residents benefit from further shops and services in Juniper Green, Balerno, and even Edinburgh for a wider range of shops and services such as larger supermarkets and entertainment options. Closer to the village though is Muir Wood Park, a nice local park popular with children and families. There’s also a great community spirit in Currie, indeed, Currie Community Centre holds many events throughout the calendar year for locals. Indeed, one of the most popular worth mentioning is the Currie Beer and Curry festival which takes place annually, in summer. Currie Kirk, over 200 years old, has well-kept grounds, war memorial and graveyard with even older gravestones that’s appreciated by locals and visitors alike. Currie’s proximity to the scenic Pentland Hills is another fantastic benefit for locals. The Pentland Hills and regional park as you would expect are an area awash with natural beauty. In fact, over 10,000 hectares of countryside and 100km of paths of natural beauty, with plenty of opportunities for walking, running, cycling, horse riding, fishing, orienteering, bird spotting and more. So, there’s plenty for residents to use and enjoy, but if more is needed or sought, they’re a short car journey away.
In terms of local schooling, Currie is served by Currie High School (which has been a Green Flag Eco-School since 2004), Nether Currie Primary School and Currie Primary School. Heriot-Watt University is just a short 5-minute drive away to the north in the Riccarton estate.
In April 2024, property in Currie is above the Scottish average home value at £367,514. Over the last 12 months, different property types have had different average prices. Detached properties for instance sold for £474,069, semi-detached for £344,866, terraced for £294,037, and flats for £253,644.
