Who
Edinburgh-born Alan Berry joined the firm in 2012 under the graduate programme and benefited from rotations within the agency, valuation, and property management departments. In 2015 Alan passed his Assessment of Professional Competence and is now a Chartered Surveyor specialising in Commercial Property Management.

That was then
Alan attended George Watson College where he excelled as an office-bearer (Head of House), School Athletics Captain, and was awarded the Stewart MacFarlane Memorial Trophy for Services to Boys Athletics. He also represented Scotland in the British under the 19 Javelin Championship. He was a keen rugby player competing for the school’s 1st XV team. Following his schooling, Alan undertook a gap year in Canada where he completed a ski instructor’s course. He then attended the University of Aberdeen from 2008-2012 where he studied Property and Spatial Planning and was awarded an honors degree.

This is now
Alan works within our Property Management team where he looks after a number of multi-let and standalone commercial properties throughout Scotland.

Rest and play
Alan is a keen sportsman and plays a variety of sports, including rugby, golf, and skiing. During the summer seasons, he likes taking part in the numerous 7s and 10s tournaments with the RICS Sharks, for which he was a former committee member. He also enjoys socialising with the Young Edinburgh Surveyors and Edinburgh Young Professionals.

Who
Dundee-born Anthony Bennett is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Partner based in our Edinburgh commercial office.

That was then
Graduating from Aberdeen University with a Bachelor of Land Economy degree, Anthony joined the firm in 1999 in the commercial department of the Edinburgh office. He qualified as MRICS in June 2002 and was promoted to Partner in 2016.

This is now
Anthony’s main role is a commercial valuation based in Edinburgh, though he is also involved in agency, landlord, and tenant. He acts for all the major lenders and institutions and has recently completed a 12-month secondment at The Royal Bank of Scotland.

Rest and play
An avid Dundee United fan, Anthony is a season ticket holder at Tannadice and also enjoys motor sport, golf and rugby league.

Who
East Lothian born Bryony is a residential surveyor currently within our Edinburgh office.

That Was Then
After completing her degree in Interior Architecture, Bryony headed North to Inverness where she relished the opportunity to work within property sales. A return to Edinburgh in 2015, brought more experience of working in property sales and lettings with two large property companies.

Bryony then went on to achieve a Masters’s in Real Estate Management and Investment at Edinburgh Napier University, before joining J & E Shepherd.

This Is Now
Bryony joined the firm in September 2018 and became a qualified member of the RICS in May 2023. Bryony’s day to day responsibilities include carrying out inspections for Home Reports and Mortgage Valuations.

Rest And Play
Bryony lives in Haddington and still pursues an interest in interior design having renovated houses in the past. She enjoys spending time with her young family, socialising with friends and walking her French bulldog.

Who
Edinburgh-born D Niall Gunn is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and commercial partner based in our Edinburgh office.

That was then
Having joined the firm in 1998 in the Edinburgh office, he became an associate and was then assumed into the partnership in 2006.

This is now
Niall is responsible for the day-to-day running of the commercial valuation and rent review department covering east central Scotland, acting for a wide range of corporate, banking, and private clients.

Rest and play
An active competitive curler, part-time golfer, when not looking after his family, Niall also enjoys gardening and food.

Who
Daniel Smith is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and is an Associate within the Edinburgh office.

That was then
Daniel accepted a place at Edinburgh University where he graduated with an honour’s degree in Business Studies, before joining Shepherds as a graduate surveyor in 2017. Since then, Daniel has gained a Masters in Real Estate Management and Development at Herriot Watt University in 2018 and became a qualified member of the RICS in May 2020.

This is now
Daniel works as part of the Commercial Property Management team within the Edinburgh office, looking after a number of multi-let and standalone commercial properties throughout Scotland.

Rest and play
Daniel enjoys a variety of sports, with a particular emphasis on football, playing 5-a-side games a couple times a week. Daniel occasionally attends Tynecastle Park to watch Hearts and enjoys socialising with friends and family.

Darren is a Chartered Residential Valuation Surveyor and works in the Edinburgh Office

That was then
Darren attended Liberton High School prior to graduating from Heriot-Watt University with a BSc Hons Degree in Estate Management following which he joined J&E Shepherd in 2005.

This is now
Darren is a Management Partner and is responsible for the Residential Departments in the Edinburgh and Fife offices.

Darren lives in Edinburgh and enjoys squash, golf, and skiing

Who
Born and raised in St Andrews, Donal is a partner based in our Edinburgh office.

A partner in the firm’s residential department in Edinburgh, Donal carries out all aspects of residential valuation work for a broad range of clients.

Donal lives in Edinburgh and has played football for The Spartans since 2002. A member of The St Andrews Golf Club, he also enjoys spending time with his young family and friends.

Originally from Northumberland, Ed moved to Edinburgh in 2001 before moving to East Lothian in 2021.

That was then
Ed studied Architectural History as an undergraduate at Edinburgh University, and completed a real estate postgraduate degree at Heriot Watt University in 2010 before joining Shepherds in 2013. He achieved MRICS status in 2015 and was made an Associate in 2018 before becoming Partner in 2023.

Emily Anderson is a Chartered Surveyor in our Edinburgh Commercial Office, having qualified as a member of the RICS in November 2020.

Emily studied her undergraduate at Edinburgh University before studying Real Estate Management and Development MSc at Heriot-Watt University in 2017/18.

This is now
Based in the Edinburgh office, Emily became a Partner in 2025 and now leads the Edinburgh, Lothians, and Borders agency team. She is responsible for overseeing the sales, lettings, and acquisitions of commercial properties. Emily also works closely with the lease advisory and valuation team.

Rest and play
Emily is a keen horse rider and was a member of British Eventing throughout her younger years. More recently, she enjoys running and going to the gym. In her spare time, she loves socialising with friends and family and following F1 and horse racing.

Born and raised in Fife, Graeme is a Managing Partner based in our Edinburgh office

That Was Then
A graduate of Aberdeen University, he joined the firm at the end of 2011 as a graduate in the Kirkcaldy office, becoming an Associate in 2015, a Partner in 2019 and joining the Management team in December 2026.

This Is Now
A Managing Partner in the firm’s residential department in Edinburgh, Graeme carries out all aspects of residential valuation work for a broad range of clients whilst assisting in the firm’s business development alongside leading the firm’s Graduate Recruitment and Training program.

Rest And Play
A resident of Edinburgh, Graeme is a keen golfer. He enjoys watching and playing most sports and socialising with family and friends.

Who
Northern Ireland-born Ian Hannon is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and one of the firm’s managing partners, based in our Edinburgh office.

That was then
Having completed a degree in Town Planning, Ian embarked on a surveying career via an MLE from Aberdeen University and joined the firm in 1995 in the Dundee office. He became a partner in 2001 and was appointed a managing partner within the firm in 2008.

This is now
Ian has responsibility for the Edinburgh, Livingston, Musselburgh, and Galashiels offices, as well as overall management and business development roles throughout the firm. His expertise is in commercial property, including investment, agency, and valuation.

Rest and play
A weekend taxi driver for the children (three girls!), Ian enjoys golf, football, horse racing and has a fairly hectic social life.

Who
Stirling born Ian Fergusson is a fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Senior partner.  He is also a past member of a number of RICS Boards including the UK Board UK, the UK Residential Board, he is a  past- Chairman of RICS Scotland Board, is a former member of the Cross Industry Residential Valuation Forum. He is also Chief Surveyor of SBVS which acts for lenders panelling valuation work across the UK.

That was then
Having joined the firm in 1992 as an associate in the Stirling office, he became a partner in 1994 and has been extensively involved in the set-up and expansion of Shepherd ever since. He assumed Senior Partner role in November 2023.

This is now
As Senior Partner Ian has overall responsibility for the day-to-day running of the firm, together with its extensive interests in the Nottingham-based survey and panel management business, which provides UK coverage for national lender contracts.

Rest and play
Ian sometimes gets a chance to play golf (a handicap of 12), when he can squeeze it into his busy schedule.. He enjoys keeping active and seeking a healthy lifestyle; not always successfully!

Who
Louis is a commercial surveyor within the Edinburgh office who specialises in valuation.

That Was Then
Louis has nearly 10 years of experience within the property and construction industry, he graduated in Building Surveyor in 2021 and joined Shepherd in 2023 where has since had roles within the valuation, agency and lease advisory teams in Edinburgh.

This Is Now
Louis now specialises in the valuation of commercial assets for a range clients, including lenders, estates and a range of private clients.

Rest And Play
When not at work Louis can be found socialising, watching football or playing squash and padel.

Who
Luke is a chartered surveyor working within the Edinburgh Residential Office.

That was then
Luke attended Holy Rood High School before Graduating from Edinburgh Napier University where he graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Building Surveying. He then joined J&E Shepherd in 2017.

This is now
Luke became a qualified member of the RICS in May 2020. Luke is a member of the Residential team working within the Edinburgh Office. Luke’s day to day responsibilities include carrying out inspections for Home Reports and Mortgage Valuations.

Rest and play
Luke spends his free time attending Easter Road, going to gigs and the occasional game of golf.

Dunfermline-born Michael Horne is a Partner in our Edinburgh Office.

That was then
Michael graduated from Heriot-Watt University in 1991. He began his career at Robert Hall Partnership that same year and joined Shepherd in 1998. He became an associate in 2000 and a Partner in 2004.

This is now
Michael is a Partner in the Firm’s residential department in Edinburgh, carrying out residential valuation work for the majority of Edinburgh solicitors and estate agents.

Rest and play
Michael lives in the Murrayfield district of Edinburgh and is married with two sons. In his spare time, he enjoys golf, being a member of Murrayfield Golf Club, with a handicap of four. Michael also enjoys watching football and rugby.

Nick is a Residential surveyor and works in our Edinburgh office.

He attended Hawick High School prior to his graduation from Edinburgh Napier University with a BSC (Hons) in Property Development & Valuation, following which he joined J&E Shepherd in June 2016.

This is now

Rest and play
Nick lives in Edinburgh and is a keen sportsman enjoying several sports such as rugby, golf, and snow sports. Aside from this, Nick enjoys horse racing and football being a Manchester United fan.

Who
Sam is a graduate surveyor working within the Edinburgh Residential Office.

Sam attended Kirkwall Grammar School in Orkney before Graduating from Edinburgh Napier University where he graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Reak Estate Surveying. He then joined J&E Shepherd in 2021.

This Is Now
Sam is working towards becoming a chartered member of the RICS. Sam is a member of the Residential team working within the Edinburgh Office. Sam’s day to day responsibilities include assisting with Home Reports and Mortgage Valuations inspections.
