Buying in Gullane

The small town of Gullane, in East Lothian, is a lovely seaside and very desirable residential town. It has a population of roughly 2,600 residents and is situated on the Firth of Forth. It is about 5 miles west of North Berwick, about 20 miles east of Edinburgh, and about 8.5 miles north of Haddington.

Gullane is primarily a residential area and a popular golf resort, with several quality golf courses in the surrounding area. Many of the town’s sizeable villas overlook a course or have views of the Firth of Forth, adding to the appeal of the town.

In terms of amenities and attractions, Gullane has a fantastic beachfront that attracts residents and visotrs as well as windsurfers and swimmers, depending on the weather. Nearby attractions include Dirleton Castle and Gardens; Myreton Motor Museum and the Museum of Flight at East Fortune. Amenities also include a village hall and a variety of local shops and eateries; however, the biggest attractions of the town are undoubtedly golf and the scenery, both working together to create quite the appeal. For instance, Gullane is the home of Muirfield which has hosted The Open Championship on numerous occasions, most recently in 2013. In addition to Muirfield, Gullane is the site of several other golf courses in the village and surrounding area. At the Gullane Golf Club, three eighteen-hole links courses straddle large grassed-over solidified remains of a volcano, of which a composite course hosted both the Scottish Open and Ladies Scottish Open in 2018. From the top of the hill on each course there is a fine view over Aberlady and Aberlady Bay towards Edinburgh and the Forth Bridge as well as the coast of Fife and the Lomond Hills.

In terms of transport links for the village, the only real means is by car. Despite the relatively restrictive transport links it remains a popular computer village for residents working in Edinburgh and larger East Lothian towns.

As for local schooling, the village is served by a single primary school: Gullane Primary School. When of secondary age, pupils would attend North Berwick High School.

      Buying in Musselburgh

Long known as the “Honest Toun” after a medieval story involving the devoted care of a Scottish nobleman by the people of the town, Musselburgh is a beautiful and historic town in East Lothian with much to suggest it’s long and storied history. Situated on the coast of the Firth of Forth, Musselburgh has a fine beach, much open green space and a true wealth of architecture.

Situated on the western edge of East Lothian (the town in fact used to lie in West Lothian), Musselburgh is a town which has saw quite extensive development around its historic core in the latter half of the twentieth century. This is a trend which has never really let up, and Musselburgh is attractive not only for its many landmarks – like Fisherow harbour, Musselburgh Racecourse and the stunning grounds of the prestigious Loretto school – but also for its close proximity to Edinburgh.

This nearness to the nation’s capital makes Musselburgh at once a popular commuter town as well as the host of a strong local economy as well. Musselburgh has the attraction of nationwide fame (the aforementioned racecourse for example) and its local prestigious schools (not only Loretto but also Musselburgh Grammar, one of the oldest grammar schools in the country) which drives jobs in the area. Housing development is also strong in Musselburgh, with recent developments such as proposed flats on the site of a former supermarket continuing a long trend of development and a buoyant property market in Musselburgh.

In terms of property types, Musselburgh bears testament to its long history and the eclectic development of more recent times. In Musselburgh, traditional properties such as granite terraces or sandstone tenements stand side-by-side with modern flats, bungalows and semi-detached properties.

The average price for property in Musselburgh stood at £234,187 in July 2021. This is a rise of 1.26% in the last three months since April 2021 and a good rise of 9.29% since July 2020.
