Buying in Uplawmoor

Uplawmoor is a small countryside village in East Renfrewshire roughly 3 miles southwest of Neilston and just over 5 miles southwest of Barrhead. It has about 700 residents but is a vibrant little community well connected to larger nearby towns of Neilston, Barrhead, Stewarton, Newton Mearns, and Paisley.

Uplawmoor definitely has the rural village feel without being cut off. It doesn’t have too many local shops or goings on of its own. The village was once a main settlement for people who worked on the farmland belonging to the nearby Caldwell estate owned by the Mure family. This long association between Uplawmoor and the Mure family began in the 14th century, when Godfrey Mure married the heiress of Caldwell. Through this marriage most of the estate of Caldwell fell to Godfrey and lasted until the last Mure: Colonel William Muir (1880 – 1912). When he died the Caldwell estate was broken up and sold to tenant farmers living nearby. Many of the village’s residents still work in the agricultural industry today but many also commute out for work.

When commuting, or travelling generally, many residents rely on car. Neilston Road runs right through the centre of the village and connects to the A736 trunk road for travel towards Glasgow and Paisley, or towards Stewarton and wider Ayrshire. The town has no railway station, however, there have been several local campaigns to reopen the station albeit unsuccessfully. The closest train station is in nearby Neilston.

In terms of things to do, Uplawmoor has mostly farmland surrounding it, but the Pollick Glen and Shillford Woods are also nearby, providing some wonderful woodland walking opportunities to locals. Loch Libo, a Scottish Wildlife Trust Site of Special Scientific Interest is practically on the village’s doorstep to the west and is the winter home of flocks of whooper (common) swans. At the end of the loch is an area of large tussock sedges and on the far side is a striking waterfall among more woodland. Residents certainly benefit also from proximity to the likes of Neilston and Barrhead where they have more choice of shops and amenities to enjoy.

As for local schooling, the village is served by a single primary school: Uplawmoor Primary School. When of secondary age, pupils would typically travel to Barrhead to attend either Barrhead High School or St Luke’s High School.

In January 2024, property in Uplawmoor stood at an average value of £346,300.
